Having been denied a shot at winning an Olympic medal after being disqualified for failing the weigh-in, India wrestler Vinesh Phogat has knocked on the doors of Court for of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Vinesh was set to create history by becoming the first ever females wrestler from India to contest for gold medal but on the day of her bout, her weight was found to be 100gm more than the limit and consequently, she was disqualified from the entire event meaning she won’t even get the guaranteed silver medal.
The stunning turn of events saw Indian government getting involved with the country’s sports minister revealing their national Olympic committee has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling over the decision.
A heartbroken Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling a day after her disqualification but she has turned to CAS in hopes of being awarded a joint-silver medal.
As per reports, CAS granted the Indian contingent until 9:30 PM IST on Thursday to finalise their legal representation. The Indian camp working to secure a top legal expert for the hearing, which has now been rescheduled to 10 AM local time today (1:30 PM IST). However, it has been postponed to 5:30 PM IST.
